Pull Apart Pizza Rolls

How appetizing is it to pull apart a warm, soft roll to reveal a gooey cheesy center? That tiny puff of steam escaping when you pull it apart makes my mouth water every time!

You need to try these Pull Apart Pizza Rolls! You can use your favorite pizza toppings, and just wait until you taste and smell these fresh from the oven!

My son raved about these pull apart pizza rolls, and especially loved them dipped in some warm pizza sauce. They’re soft and tender like dinner rolls, but with the added deliciousness of a surprise-inside: melted mozzarella and pepperoni middle.

Homemade bread or rolls can seem intimidating at first, if you’ve never made them, but this recipe is simple and easy to follow, give it a try!

INGREDIENTS:

  • Ingredients for the dough:

  • 1 packet of active dry yeast

  • 1 teaspoon of white sugar

  • a dash of salt

  • 1 cup of warm water (not hot/boiling)

  • 2  and 1/2 cups of flour

  • 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil

Other ingredients:

  • 2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese (divided in two parts)

  • 1 cup of your favourite sauce (I like to use pizza sauce and add oregano & garlic powder to it)

  • 1/2 cup of pepperoni

  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder

STEPS:

  1. Make the dough (here is a link to my delicious dough recipe, it’s also posted below: https://www.eatingwithhouri.com/post/delicious-homemade-pizza-dough-recipe )

  2. Lay out the filling ingredients: shredded mozzarella, sauce, and pepperoni.

  3. Make the rolls: Pinch off a piece of dough about 2 tablespoons in size. Form it into a ball and make an indent in the center, stretch it out. Put a bit of cheese, sauce and pepperoni into the middle of the dough. Press the dough around it to seal the filling inside, and place the stuffed dough ball into the prepared pan, upside down, pinched side down. Repeat this step with your remaining dough and filling until you’ve filled your pan.

  4. I use a 9-inch square baking pan, lightly sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.

  5. Prepare the toppings: I topped mine with shredded mozzarella cheese, oregano and garlic. You could add whatever toppings you like!

  6. Bake for 30 minutes at 350°F.

  7. Bon appétit!

*Steps for making the dough:

  1. In a medium bowl, add the warm water and dissolve the yeast and sugar. Let it stand, covered, for about 10 minutes.

  2. Stir in the flour, salt and oil. Mix it all together until smooth. Cover the dough and let it rest for roughly 30 minutes.

Notes:

Baking Pans: you can an oven-safe skillet if you’d like. I always bake these rolls in a 9-inch square baking pan. You can even  use a springform pan, or a round cake pan. You could also bake them on a lined or greased baking sheet; the key is to make sure the rolls are touching!

Vegetarian option: You can just leave out the pepperoni and include more cheese for the filling, or use a plant-based pepperoni instead. I put pepperoni in every other roll, it’s a fun surprise to see what you’ll get!
