Easy Dirty Cabbage with Ground Beef
If you’re looking for an easy, flavour-packed dinner that comes together in one pot, this Dirty Cabbage with Ground Beef is one to add to your weeknight rotation. It’s hearty, savoury and full of delicious Cajun-inspired flavour, with tender cabbage, seasoned ground beef, peppers and onions all cooked together.
I love recipes like this because they’re simple enough for a busy weeknight but still feel like a comforting homemade meal. Everything cooks in one pot, and the cabbage soaks up all those wonderful flavours from the seasoned beef, vegetables and spices.
The smoked paprika, Cajun seasoning and Worcestershire sauce give this dish so much flavour without needing a complicated ingredient list. You can also leave out the Italian sausage and use all ground beef, making it easy to adapt to whatever you have in the fridge.
It’s delicious served on its own and makes fantastic leftovers too. Give my recipe a try!
INGREDIENTS:
● 1 lb of lean ground beef
● 1 lb of ground Italian sausages meat
● 1 tablespoon olive oil
● 1 small yellow onion, diced
● 3 cloves garlic, minced
● 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped (8 cups)
● 1 red bell pepper, diced
● 2 tablespoons of tomato paste
● 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
● 1 teaspoon of Cajun seasoning
● 1 teaspoon of onion powder
● 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
● 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
● 1 teaspoon of salt, or to taste
● 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
● 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
● 1/2 cup of beef broth
STEPS:
1. Brown the meat
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, if using. Cook until browned and cooked through, breaking the meat apart as it cooks. Drain any excess grease if needed.
2. Add the vegetables
Add the diced onion and red bell pepper. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes, until they begin to soften. Add the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
3. Season
Add the tomato paste, smoked paprika, Cajun seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, salt and red pepper flakes. Stir well to coat the meat and vegetables.
4. Add the cabbage
Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. It may seem like a lot at first, but it will cook down considerably. Stir everything together until the cabbage is coated in the seasoned mixture.
5. Simmer
Add the Worcestershire sauce and beef broth. Stir, cover and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender.
6. Finish cooking
Remove the lid and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes, allowing any excess liquid to cook off and the flavours to concentrate.
7. Bon appétit! Enjoy!
