The Best Homemade Salsa

I have found it, this is THE Best Homemade Salsa Recipe! This homemade salsa is restaurant-style and absolutely delicious! I usually eat it with tortilla chips, sometimes  as a topping on my tacos & burritos, I also dip my veggies in it and sometimes even eat it by the spoonfuls! Such a great snack and a hit at all parties, you have to give it a try!

In my opinion the best salsa is made with fresh tomatoes. I have a tomato plant that wasn’t as bountiful as I had hoped, so I had to buy extra tomatoes for this, instead of going for the canned ones, believe me, using fresh tomatoes truly makes a world of difference!

This recipe is not too garlicky or too oniony, nor is it too spicy, it has the perfect balance of flavours. The fresh lime, cilantro, chilli powder and cumin really put this salsa in a league of its own! I find that this salsa tastes even better the next day, after all the flavors marinate together.

It keeps well in the refrigerator for a week, although mine never lasts that long!

A secret- I don’t use a food processor and I believe this makes a huge difference! Hand chopping all the veggies is so much better. It is more time consuming, so if you’re in a rush, do go for your food processor or blender. If you do use one of these small appliances, don’t purée the ingredients, some texture makes it better. Finally, I like to add a couple of tablespoons of RoTel, which is basically ripened tomatoes and zesty green chilies, a tasty mixture of secret spices, as they call it.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 lbs ripe cherry tomatoes (about 25) or any tomatoes of your choosing

  • 2 tablespoons of RoTel

  • 1/2 of a chopped red or white medium onion

  • 1/2 cup fresh of cilantro (about 2 handfuls)

  • 1 large clove garlic, thinly chopped

  • 2 tablespoons of fresh lime juice

  • 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cumin

  • Salt and pepper to taste

STEPS:

  1. Finely chop the vegetables.

  2. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl.

  3. Serve with tortilla chips.

  4. Bon appétit!
